Heavy Snowfall Closes Zojila Pass, Strands 200 Travelers

Kargil, October 7, 2025 – Overnight snowfall of 8 inches in Kargil district has closed the Zojila Pass and stranded over 200 travelers on the Srinagar-Leh highway. The Ladakh administration issued a travel advisory at 7 AM, warning of black ice and avalanches in higher reaches. Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar reported power outages in 15 villages, with restoration teams dispatched by 10 AM.

The snow, earlier than the usual November onset, follows IMD’s western disturbance forecast. Drass recorded -5°C, with winds at 30 kmph. BRO personnel cleared 5 km of the pass by noon, but full reopening is expected October 9. Stranded tourists from Jammu, including 50 in a convoy, were housed at wayside dhabas; no injuries reported.

Local trader Haji Bashir Ahmed, 55, said: “Apples in storage are at risk; early freeze could spoil 20% of stock.” The Suru Valley saw 4 inches, impacting 300 farmers. LAHDC Kargil Chairman Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon held an emergency meeting, allocating Rs 5 lakh for relief. Schools in Kargil remain open, but online classes are encouraged.

This adds to tourism woes post-September unrest, with 30% flight delays from Leh airport.
