Jammu’s Youth Get Tech Boost: New IT Hub Launched at R S Pura College

Jammu took a significant step toward empowering its youth today, September 29, 2025, with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art IT Training Hub at Government Degree College, R S Pura, at 11:00 AM, aimed at equipping 1,000 students annually with skills in software development, data analytics, and cybersecurity.

The facility, launched by Higher Education Minister Sakina Itoo in the presence of Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, Umesh Rai, is a joint initiative of the J&K Skill Development Mission and the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT). Itoo, addressing a gathering of 500 students and faculty at the college campus, said, “This hub is a gateway for Jammu’s youth to seize global tech opportunities while staying rooted in their homeland.”

The IT Hub, funded with a Rs 2.5 crore grant from the J&K government, features 40 high-speed computers, a dedicated server room, and a curriculum offering six-month certifications in Python, cloud computing, and ethical hacking. The program targets rural students from areas like Akhnoor, Samba, and Kathua, with 60% of seats reserved for economically weaker sections, offering free training to eligible candidates. NIELIT Director Anil Gupta noted, “Our goal is to make Jammu a tech talent hub – 100 students will get internships with local IT firms like JK Tech Solutions.” A first-year student, Priyanka Sharma from R S Pura, shared, “Learning coding here means I can dream of a tech job without leaving Jammu.”

The launch aligns with efforts to recover from the August floods, which damaged college infrastructure across the region, and addresses Jammu’s 8% graduate unemployment rate, as per the Labour Bureau’s 2024 report. The hub will also support flood-affected students by providing digital learning tools to replace lost resources. Rural connectivity challenges persist, with patchy internet in border areas like R S Pura, but the government has committed to upgrading broadband infrastructure by December 2025. The event saw participation from local MLAs and District Development Council members, who pledged to replicate the model in Reasi and Doda.

Social media buzzed with #JammuITHub, with students posting photos of the new lab and expressing excitement for tech careers. The initiative complements Jammu’s tourism-driven economy, hit by a 40% visitor drop post-Pahalgam attack, by diversifying job prospects. As the hub opens its doors, Jammu’s youth see a digital future taking shape, grounded in local opportunity.
