Ladakh Normalcy Returns: Schools, Markets Reopen as LG Eases Restrictions Post-Meet

Leh, October 9, 2025 – Ladakh edged toward normalcy today as colleges and markets reopened following Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta’s directive to lift remaining restrictions, a day after the apex body-administration meet addressed September’s unrest. The decision, announced at a 10 AM review, saw 6,000 students return to Government Degree College Leh and women’s institutes by 11 AM, with 75% attendance despite -1°C fog. Gupta, from the hill council, stated: “Reopenings reflect public trust; we’ll phase out measures while ensuring safety for all.”

The protests, killing four and injuring 120, stemmed from demands for statehood and Sixth Schedule rights. Yesterday’s talks with Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) agreed on 33% job quotas and land probes, per LAB’s Thupstan Chhewang at 1 PM. “Judicial inquiry for victims next,” he said. In Kargil, Shia Muslim students hit 85% turnout, while Buddhist youth in Leh joined peace marches.

For Ladakh’s residents – Buddhists in Stok, Shia Muslims in Drass, Jammu migrants in bazaars – it’s economic relief. Markets in Leh’s old town buzzed with 80% shops open, benefiting 1,500 traders, including women selling pashminas. Taxi drivers, 600 strong, got VLTD extensions till November.
