SURAT, September 14, 2026 – At least 75 students residing at a private boarding school in Surat fell ill due to suspected food poisoning, with 12 of them requiring hospitalisation, officials reported. The incident occurred at the hostel of P P Savani School, located in the city’s Abrama area. According to Medical Health Officer P H Umrigar of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), the affected students began developing symptoms, including diarrhoea and vomiting, starting Saturday night. Officials confirmed that all the students are currently out of danger.
Among the 12 students admitted to the hospital for treatment, nine were girls, with all hospitalized patients aged between 15 and 17 years. Umrigar noted that four of these students have already been discharged following their treatment, while the condition of the remaining eight students is reported to be stable. The boarding facility houses a massive population, accommodating a total of 2,200 students alongside 300 staff members. Authorities indicated that all residents had consumed the same food on Saturday before the symptoms emerged.
In response to the medical emergency, the SMC’s health department quickly initiated action. Dedicated teams from the Food Department, Health Department, and Sanitation Department conducted a thorough inspection of the P P Savani School hostel premises. During this inspection, officials collected four distinct food samples, which have been forwarded for necessary laboratory testing to determine the exact cause of the contamination. Furthermore, the civic body deployed a mobile medical team to the campus to conduct comprehensive health check-ups for the other students residing in the hostel to ensure their continued medical assessment and safety.
