Jammu – November 7: Reflecting subdued consumer sentiment and discretionary spending cutbacks, the automobile retail sector in Jammu and Kashmir experienced a sharp annual decline of 28.50 percent in October 2026, according to official market registration data compiled by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
Total automobile registrations across all vehicular categories in the Union Territory stood at 19,856 units in October 2026, marking a significant drop from the 27,771 units registered during the corresponding festive month in October 2025. On a sequential month-on-month basis, overall retail contracted by 6.5 percent compared to 21,234 units sold in September 2026.
The downturn was most acute in the mass-market two-wheeler segment, which witnessed a steep 34.10 percent contraction, registering 10,472 units in October 2026 against 15,890 units sold in October 2025. Similarly, passenger vehicle (cars and utility vehicles) sales plummeted by 27.98 percent to 6,488 units, down from 9,009 units logged in the prior year. The agricultural tractor segment registered a 12.04 percent de-growth (336 units vs. 382 units), while commercial vehicles contracted marginally by 3.73 percent to 930 units.
Bucking the broader negative trend, the three-wheeler commercial passenger segment recorded modest positive growth of 6.21 percent, rising to 1,590 units compared to 1,497 units in October 2025. Concurrently, the heavy construction equipment segment expanded by an impressive 48.15 percent, logging 40 units against 27 units last year, buoyed by ongoing public works and highway projects.
Commenting on the figures, Sanjay Aggarwal, Chairperson of FADA Jammu & Kashmir, stated that despite the festive calendar, market demand failed to meet anticipated seasonal targets. However, Aggarwal identified electric vehicle (EV) penetration as a key silver lining. “The steady growth and increasing consumer acceptance of Electric Vehicles represents a positive structural evolution in Jammu and Kashmir. With expanding charging networks, greater product availability, and rising environmental awareness, EV adoption will continue to gain traction,” he stated, expressing optimism that the upcoming winter marriage season will provide renewed retail momentum.
