JAMMU/SRINAGAR, July 16, 2026 — Setting the stage for a major political showdown, the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced a massive region-wide protest on July 20. The agitation is aimed at exposing the alleged failures and unfulfilled promises of the Omar Abdullah-led National Conference (NC) government.
The BJP’s counter-protest is strategically timed to coincide with the National Conference’s planned agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the same day, where the ruling party intends to demand the restoration of J&K’s statehood.
Countering the ‘Political Drama’
J&K BJP President Sat Paul Sharma launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of using the statehood issue as a smokescreen to hide administrative incompetence.
“The Chief Minister is indulging in sheer political drama,” Sharma stated. “He is misleading the public and politicizing the statehood issue for his own political interests. This upcoming protest in Delhi is nothing but a desperate attempt by the NC government to divert the public’s attention from its utter failure to deliver on the ground.”
Sharma further emphasized that despite clear assurances from the Prime Minister regarding the restoration of statehood at the appropriate time, the NC continues to enact theatrics rather than focusing on governance.
Focus on Real Issues: Unemployment and Basic Amenities
Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, echoed the party president’s sentiments, completely dismissing the NC’s New Delhi protest as an “eye wash.”
The BJP leader noted that his party’s July 20 protests across the Union Territory will center entirely on the real issues plaguing the common citizen. “I fail to understand why the people of J&K fall for their theatrics,” Sunil Sharma remarked. “Our agitation will highlight the pressing problems of severe unemployment, backdoor appointments, water shortages, and the ongoing electricity crisis across Jammu and Kashmir.”
Sunil Sharma also addressed the statehood debate directly, clarifying that the restoration of statehood remains a part of the BJP’s commitment. “It will be restored through the Parliament, not through protests at Jantar Mantar. You cannot indulge in corruption and incompetence and then hide behind the banner of statehood,” he added.
As both rival political factions gear up for their respective demonstrations on July 20, the political atmosphere in the Union Territory remains highly charged.
