NEW DELHI, July 31, 2026 – Reaffirming its commitment to the agricultural sector, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme for the next five years. The scheme will now run from 2026-27 to 2030-31, backed by a massive total financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefed reporters following the cabinet meeting, stating that the extension aims to ensure continued financial stability and support for eligible landholding farmer families across India.
Under the flagship PM-KISAN scheme, which originally launched in February 2019, eligible farmers receive assured income support of ₹6,000 per year. To align with the crop cycle, this financial aid is provided in three equal installments of ₹2,000. The funds are transferred directly into Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts through a transparent Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism, significantly reducing farmers’ reliance on informal lending sources.
1.Overall Disbursement:
Since its inception, the PM-KISAN scheme has transferred over ₹4.47 lakh crore directly into farmers’ bank accounts across 23 installments.
2.Pandemic Relief:
During the severe disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than ₹1.71 lakh crore was disbursed under the scheme to provide immediate financial relief to the agricultural community.
3.Women Empowerment in Farming:
Women farmers constitute nearly one in every four beneficiaries, having received over ₹1.06 lakh crore in direct assistance to date.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the social media platform X to express his satisfaction, stating, “We are committed to empowering and ensuring the prosperity of our farmer brothers and sisters across the country.” He highlighted that the PM-KISAN scheme helps annadatas (food providers) meet essential expenses related to seeds, fertilizers, and other critical agricultural needs.
Independent evaluations, including assessments by NITI Aayog’s Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO), underscore the program’s success. Over 92% of beneficiaries reported utilizing the funds directly for agricultural activities, and 85% noted an improvement in their farm income alongside a reduced dependence on informal credit.
The government believes the continued expansion of PM-KISAN will further enhance farmers’ capacity to invest, mitigate agricultural risks, and bolster the rural economy.
