GUWAHATI/DHUBRI, September 21, 2026 – Marking a historic milestone in the industrial landscape of Northeast India, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s massive ₹48,000-crore ultra-supercritical thermal power plant at Chapar in Dhubri district. The greenfield 3,200 MW project, comprising four high-efficiency 800 MW units, represents one of the largest single industrial investments ever made in Assam. Addressing the grand ceremony, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that the project is a proud outcome of the confidence generated by the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0 and will serve as a cornerstone in transforming the state into a dynamic regional energy hub. Scheduled for phased commissioning starting from December 2030, with full operational capacity expected by December 2032, the mega facility is designed to significantly augment the state’s power generation, thereby reducing its historical reliance on external energy purchases while providing reliable electricity to fuel domestic, commercial, and industrial growth.
The ambitious project is expected to trigger widespread socio-economic transformation across lower Assam by generating an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 jobs during the intensive construction phase and around 5,000 permanent employment opportunities once fully operational. Adani Group Director Jeet Adani, who attended the foundation-laying ceremony, highlighted the conglomerate’s commitment to local empowerment, revealing that 4,500 youth from Assam have already been recruited through preliminary job drives for the project. He praised the Chief Minister’s proactive, “Gen Z” administrative speed and asserted that the thermal plant will spark immense economic activity for local businesses, contractors, and suppliers. The Chapar facility forms the core of the Adani Group’s broader ₹63,000-crore energy investment pledge in Assam, which also includes a ₹15,000-crore commitment for two Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW by Adani Green Energy Limited. Beyond fortifying the state’s SGST revenues and energy security, the Adani Foundation has also expanded its social development footprint in Assam, recently providing critical relief to over 8,000 flood-affected families in Sivasagar and Dhemaji districts while driving community initiatives across the Kamrup Rural district.
