JAMMU, October 19, 2026 – Emphasizing humane animal management and public safety, Deputy Commissioner Jammu, Minga Sherpa, chaired a crucial meeting on Sunday to review the activities of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Jammu and assess overall animal welfare measures across the district.
During the meeting, the DC extensively reviewed the status of the ongoing anti-rabies vaccination programme. He evaluated the roles played by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), the Animal Husbandry Department, and various animal welfare organizations, while also taking stock of the availability of anti-rabies vaccines with the concerned departments.
Directing officials to organize dedicated camps for anti-rabies vaccination, DC Sherpa stressed that sterilization campaigns under the Animal Birth Control programme must be carried out simultaneously to ensure effective and humane management of the stray animal population. Crucially, he underlined that these critical activities must not remain confined to the city limits but should be rapidly extended to rural areas and other Urban Local Bodies of the district following a fixed schedule.
To achieve this, the DC directed the concerned departments to formulate a scheduled action plan for vaccination and sterilization activities. He urged them to work in close inter-departmental coordination to ensure substantial and visible progress on the ground within a strictly defined timeframe.
In addition to the vaccination drives, DC Sherpa reviewed the progress of the upcoming Animal Care Centre for SPCA at village Chowadhi. He assessed the development of animal shelter infrastructure, the installation of adequate power facilities, and the provision of essential medical support to these shelters. After reviewing the follow-up actions on decisions taken in earlier meetings, he firmly directed officers to ensure the time-bound completion of all pending infrastructure works.
The meeting was attended by key district officials including Chief Planning Officer Ajaypal Singh; SP Headquarters Jammu, Sandeep Bhat; Joint Commissioner JMC, Abdul Sattar; Assistant Commissioner General, Sania Haq Khan; and RTO Jammu, Jasmeet Singh. Senior Vice President of SPCA Jammu, Devinder Kaur Madaan, was also present during the proceedings.
