ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA & BARBUDA, November 5, 2026 – Underscoring its commitment as a key partner for the Global South, India has announced the extension of a $500 million Line of Credit (LoC) to Guyana to support major development initiatives across infrastructure, healthcare, and defense sectors.
The announcement was made by External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S. Jaishankar during a bilateral meeting with Guyanese President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. The high-level meeting took place on Wednesday on the sidelines of the ongoing Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.
In a social media post, Dr. Jaishankar expressed satisfaction over the steady progression of the India-Guyana relationship, noting that the new financial commitment builds upon the momentum generated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the South American nation in 2024.
The $500 million credit facility will be strategically deployed to support Guyana’s national development priorities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that India has already completed several impactful development projects in Guyana, and this new extension will further cement the development partnership between the two nations.
In addition to the massive credit line, the two leaders oversaw the signing of three crucial bilateral agreements aimed at boosting grassroots development, manufacturing, and digital infrastructure in Guyana. These include:
- Manufacturing Support: An agreement for the supply and installation of manufacturing projects aimed at boosting Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Guyana.
- Community Development: A pact offering grant assistance for the implementation of Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) designed to deliver immediate socio-economic benefits to local communities.
- Digital Payment Ecosystem: A landmark agreement to enhance cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), specifically focused on developing a unified digital payment system in Guyana modeled on India’s highly successful Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Highlighting the shared historical and cultural roots between the two countries, the MEA emphasized that India and Guyana, as Global South partners, will continue to collaborate closely to advance mutual priorities for development and economic prosperity.
