India’s Metro Network Expands from 248 km to 1,200 km in 12 Years, Says PM Modi

PUNE, November 3, 2026 – Underscoring a massive leap in India’s urban transit infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the country’s operational metro network has expanded from a mere 248 kilometers before 2014 to a staggering 1,200 kilometers today.

The Prime Minister shared these milestones while virtually inaugurating the Pune Metro Line 3 (Pink Line) and laying the foundation stones for four new metro corridors under Phase-II, an infrastructure boost involving a total investment of approximately ₹21,800 crore.

Addressing the gathering via video conferencing, PM Modi emphasized that robust urban infrastructure is a key catalyst for accelerating the nation’s economic growth. He highlighted the central government’s continuous focus on improving the daily commute and quality of life for urban populations.

“When the country gave the NDA the opportunity to serve in 2014, we set out with a resolve to ensure the ease of living and ease of transportation for the middle class living in cities,” Modi stated during his address.

The rapid expansion of the metro rail network across major Indian cities over the last 12 years reflects a sustained governmental commitment to modernizing public transport, significantly reducing urban congestion, and promoting sustainable, eco-friendly transit solutions for millions of daily commuters.
