JAMMU, September 21, 2026 – Marking a significant step towards modernizing local urban infrastructure, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner and Jammu Smart City Ltd (JSCL) CEO, Dr. Devansh Yadav, officially initiated the redevelopment work at the historic Old Vegetable Market at Parade on Sunday. The ambitious ₹5.88 crore infrastructure upgrade aims to transform one of Jammu’s oldest and busiest trading hubs into a cleaner, highly organized, and customer-friendly environment. During his comprehensive visit, Dr. Yadav interacted extensively with local traders and members of the Vegetable Market Association, who warmly welcomed the initiative and expressed their full support. Assuring the stakeholders of the administration’s commitment, the Commissioner stated that the much-needed project would be executed on a fast-track basis, significantly enhancing hygiene standards, upgrading civic amenities, and providing a highly efficient market layout for both vendors and daily visitors.
Detailing the structural blueprint of the redevelopment, Dr. Yadav informed that a spacious Mild Steel (MS) covered shed will be constructed to provide dedicated, weather-protected vending space for the traders. This facility is designed to accommodate 117 systematic vendor platforms, each measuring 1.8 metres by 2.1 metres, to ensure orderly market operations. Emphasizing durability and ease of maintenance, the shed area will feature Kota stone flooring, while the individual vendor platforms will be finished with high-quality granite cladding and granite tops. Furthermore, the comprehensive project envisages the construction of 44 permanent commercial shop blocks, each measuring 2.4 metres by 2.7 metres, designed to support vegetable vendors and allied businesses in a structured and permanent retail setting. To address long-standing sanitation and cleanliness issues, the existing drainage network within the Mandi premises will be heavily strengthened and rehabilitated to minimize waterlogging and ensure the efficient disposal of wastewater.
Beyond functional upgrades, the redevelopment plan also focuses on enhancing the aesthetic and civic appeal of the historic market space. The project includes a completely redesigned main entry gate adorned with sandstone cladding, aimed at giving the market a distinct and visually appealing identity. For the convenience of the trading community and the general public, modern public amenities will be installed across the premises, featuring separate toilet blocks for men and women alongside drinking water cooler units. Additionally, to ensure long-term durability against regular pedestrian movement and light vehicular traffic, the internal circulation and movement areas will be developed using robust Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC). Concluding his visit, Dr. Yadav reiterated that the systematic modernization of Parade Mandi will significantly improve the handling and sale of fresh produce, offering a safer and cleaner environment aligned with the broader vision of a Smart Jammu.
