Ladakh’s First Medical College to Become Operational in 2027; Centre Approves Staff Recruitment

LEH/JAMMU, October 21, 2026 – Fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the region, Ladakh is all set to get its first-ever medical college by the academic year 2027-28. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has officially approved its operationalization at Spituk Pharka in Leh and granted a crucial “one-time relaxation” to initiate the recruitment process for faculty and support staff.

Typically, medical college recruitment requires 80 percent of the dedicated infrastructure to be completed beforehand. However, recognizing the unique geographical and developmental challenges of the Union Territory, the Centre has allowed the Ladakh administration to begin staggered recruitment against 103 sanctioned regular posts while the academic infrastructure is still under construction.

Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena welcomed the monumental decision on Monday and expressed his gratitude to Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for taking cognisance of his special request. “The approval marks a significant milestone in Ladakh’s efforts to establish its first medical college and fulfil a long-standing aspiration of the people of the region,” the LG stated on X (formerly Twitter).

The establishment of the Government Medical College (GMC) is expected to drastically improve access to trained medical professionals and specialized healthcare services in a strategically vital region where harsh climates and difficult terrains often disrupt medical access.

The Union Health Ministry has strictly stipulated that all posts must be filled on a regular basis in accordance with approved recruitment rules. Furthermore, the Ministry directed the UT administration to ensure that any interim arrangements made to host the initial academic sessions remain strictly temporary. Once the permanent infrastructure at Spituk Pharka is ready, all facilities and academic activities must be shifted there.

LG Saxena assured that the UT administration is rapidly making all necessary arrangements to welcome the first batch of medical students for the 2027-28 academic session, marking a transformative leap for Ladakh’s educational and healthcare landscape.
