KATHMANDU, August 26, 2026 – A sudden and devastating flash flood swept through Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border on Wednesday morning, claiming at least 17 lives and leaving nearly 400 people missing, including 105 Indian tourists and 37 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs). The catastrophic surge in the Bhote Koshi River washed away entire villages, critical infrastructure, and severely damaged hydropower projects.
The floodwaters, which reportedly originated from the Tibetan side of the border, struck the Rasuwagadhi-Timure area around 9:00 a.m. local time. The sudden rise in water caused widespread destruction in Rasuwa, as well as downstream in neighboring Nuwakot and Dhading districts. Vehicles, customs goods, and a newly constructed bridge were among the assets swept away by the raging river.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRM) immediately placed downstream settlements along the Trishuli and Narayani riverbanks on high alert, advising residents to evacuate to higher ground.
1.Search and Rescue Operations:
The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police have launched a massive, coordinated search-and-rescue mission. Fourteen helicopters, equipped with emergency medical teams, along with drones and sniffer dogs, have been deployed to locate survivors. Tragically, dozens of security personnel stationed in the affected areas are also among those reported missing.
2.Hundreds of Foreign Tourists Missing:
According to the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 travelers are unaccounted for, comprising 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens. The foreign missing list includes 105 Indians, 37 NRIs, and travelers from the US, UK, Malaysia, South Africa, and the Netherlands. The Indian Embassy in Nepal has set up emergency helplines to assist affected nationals.
3.Suspected Cause:
While investigations are ongoing, meteorology officials confirm the sudden deluge was not caused by local rainfall. Instead, climate experts suggest it was likely triggered by an ice and rock avalanche from a glacier that blocked a tributary before releasing a massive surge downstream, or a similar glacial event.
The disaster has severely crippled Nepal’s trade route with China, heavily damaging the Rasuwagadhi dry port and sweeping away the Miteri Bridge connecting the two countries. Neighboring nations, including India and the United States, have expressed solidarity, with India actively preparing to dispatch immediate relief materials to assist in the search, rescue, and rehabilitation operations.
