SRINAGAR, September 21, 2026 – The opening day of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly’s 10-day Autumn Session witnessed raucous scenes on Monday as sustained protests and loud sloganeering by both opposition and ruling-party members repeatedly disrupted official proceedings. The session began on a stormy note with legislators from various political factions aggressively pressing a multitude of public and political demands on the floor of the House. Leading the charge from the opposition benches, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators staged a vociferous protest, prominently displaying posters and chanting slogans against the government. Their primary demands included immediate justice for National Health Mission (NHM) employees, a complete rollback of the recent hikes in electricity tariffs, and the long-pending formal regularisation of thousands of daily wagers operating across various government departments. Joining the chaotic scenes, Congress MLAs forcefully raised concerns over an alleged recruitment paper leak, demanding stringent administrative accountability and transparency in the Union Territory’s employment processes.
While the opposition targeted the administration on governance and public welfare issues, members of the ruling National Conference (NC) actively participated in the clamour by vocally pressing for the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a core political promise of their government. Adding to the diverse array of issues raised on the opening day, senior CPI(M) legislator Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami also intervened to highlight critical public concerns, urging the House to prioritize the genuine daily struggles of the common citizens. As the relentless slogan-shouting from multiple parties created a cacophony inside the legislative chamber, making orderly debate impossible, the Speaker was forced to intervene to restore parliamentary decorum. Amid the ongoing protests, the Speaker issued a firm directive instructing that the chaotic sloganeering would be expunged and would not form a part of the official Assembly proceedings, signaling a turbulent start to the highly anticipated 10-day legislative session.
