Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha Protests Against Congress Over Sexual Harassment Charges Against MP

CHANDIGARH, October 12, 2026 – Workers of the Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha staged a massive protest in Chandigarh on Sunday, strongly condemning the Congress party for allegedly shielding its MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Professor, Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is facing serious allegations of sexual harassment.

Akoijam, a Congress Member of Parliament from Manipur, was formally dismissed from his professorial position at JNU on Friday, October 9, after an internal university inquiry reportedly substantiated complaints of sexual and mental harassment filed against him by 11 female students.

Led by Punjab BJP Women Wing President Jai Inder Kaur, hundreds of protesters attempted to march towards the Congress party office in Chandigarh to demand accountability. However, the agitating workers were intercepted by the Chandigarh Police, who halted the march and subsequently detained several demonstrators.

Speaking to the media during the protest, Jai Inder Kaur directly questioned the silence of top Congress leaders. “Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge frequently speak about women’s safety and dignity, but why are they completely silent when serious allegations emerge against their own Member of Parliament?” Kaur asked. “Is protecting their political interests more important than ensuring justice for women?”

The Mahila Morcha sharply criticized the Congress party’s track record on women’s empowerment, contrasting it with the initiatives undertaken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The protesting BJP women’s wing has laid out strict demands, including the immediate suspension of Akoijam from the Congress party, his resignation from the Lok Sabha, stringent legal action against him, and a formal public apology from the Congress high command to the 11 complainants.

“Women’s dignity and safety must never be compromised for political convenience. Congress must break its silence and take immediate action,” Kaur asserted as the protests concluded.
