NEW DELHI, September 8, 2026 – Amid escalating geopolitical pressure from the United States regarding the purchase of Russian crude, Moscow has firmly reiterated its commitment to supply India with “as much oil as it needs.” Russian Ambassador to New Delhi, Denis Alipov, strongly criticized Washington’s looming tariff threats, describing them as coercive tactics designed to stifle honest economic cooperation.
The remarks come as the US administration intensifies its efforts to restrict the global sale of Russian oil amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
1.Pushback Against US Sanctions:
The diplomatic assertion follows renewed threats from the Donald Trump-led US administration to impose up to a 100 percent tariff on the top five global buyers of Russian crude and natural gas—a list that prominently includes India, China, and Turkey. Speaking to ANI, Ambassador Alipov condemned these moves, stating, “Those who impose sanctions and tariffs have taken the path of pressure tactics instead of honest cooperation, which prevents those countries from offering a better deal to India in oil than us.”
2.Global Energy Market Realities:
Addressing the potential fallout of a complete halt to Russian crude sales, the envoy warned that the global energy infrastructure would face severe disruptions. “The energy markets cannot afford the exclusion of Russian oil,” Alipov stated, emphasizing that if Russian sales are halted, the world simply will not be able to cope. He assured that Russian oil will remain accessible in the market for India and other interested nations.
3.India’s Strategic Autonomy:
Alipov also lauded New Delhi’s steadfast approach to its domestic energy security. Reflecting on consistent messaging from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the envoy noted that India has successfully prioritized the economic needs of its massive population over external geopolitical pressures. “India has shown that it’s able to stand its ground and defend its national interests,” Alipov remarked, highlighting the resilience of the bilateral energy partnership.
As Washington pushes forward with its legislative efforts for harsher sanctions, the strategic energy alliance between Moscow and New Delhi appears resolute, driven by mutual economic interests and India’s commitment to securing affordable energy for its citizens.
