NEW DELHI, October 31, 2026 – Leading the nation in observing National Unity Day, President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday paid rich tributes to the ‘Iron Man of India,’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, on his 151st birth anniversary. She hailed him as a foremost warrior of the freedom struggle and the principal architect of a unified, modern India.
In a poignant tribute shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), President Murmu emphasized Patel’s historic and unmatched role in the seamless unification of hundreds of princely states into the Indian Union and his pivotal work in establishing a robust administrative framework for the newly independent nation.
“On the 151st birth anniversary of the ‘Iron Man’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, I offer him my humble tributes. His contribution as a leading warrior of the freedom struggle and a principal architect of modern India is unforgettable,” the President posted in Hindi.
She further added, “In honour of his incomparable contribution to the unity and integrity of the nation, we observe his birth anniversary as ‘National Unity Day’. It is my wish that, drawing inspiration from his life and ideals, all citizens of the country work with dedication towards building a developed India.”
Born in Nadiad, Gujarat, in 1875, Sardar Patel served as the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. He is revered globally for his exceptional leadership, diplomatic acumen, and unyielding commitment to national integration.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu offered floral tributes to Sardar Patel at the Gantantra Mandap inside Rashtrapati Bhavan. She later visited Patel Chowk in the national capital to garland his statue.
The solemn ceremony at Patel Chowk was attended by top dignitaries, including Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and BJP Member of Parliament Bansuri Swaraj, who all paid their floral tributes to honor Patel’s enduring legacy.
