Sleeper Bus Overturns Inside Tunnel on Jammu-Srinagar Highway, Leaving 33 Tourists Injured

RAMBAN, October 1, 2026 – At least 33 passengers, mostly tourists from West Bengal, sustained injuries when the sleeper bus they were traveling in overturned inside a tunnel near Maroog on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Ramban district on Thursday. The accident occurred while the bus was en route from Srinagar toward Jammu.

According to traffic officials, the West Bengal-registered sleeper bus (WB39K-2929), which has a seating capacity of 58, was carrying 55 passengers at the time of the incident. Rescue operations were swiftly initiated, with injured passengers shifted to the District Hospital in Ramban for preliminary treatment. The rescue effort involved personnel from the local police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Army, and volunteers from the Civil Quick Response Team (QRT) of Ramban.

Medical authorities confirmed that out of the 33 injured individuals, at least seven to nine passengers who sustained more severe injuries were subsequently referred to the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu for specialized treatment. Union Minister Jitendra Singh stated that he was monitoring the situation and that, fortunately, none of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. He assured that all possible medical assistance was being provided to the victims and that his office remained in constant touch with local authorities.

Following the accident, vehicular movement on the crucial highway was briefly disrupted. However, traffic officials confirmed that a single carriageway through the affected tunnel tube was quickly reopened to facilitate the continuous flow of stranded traffic. The exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation by the local authorities.
