LUCKNOW, October 6, 2026 – In a massive push to control the stray dog population and curb the rising incidents of dog bites, the Uttar Pradesh government has successfully sterilized and vaccinated 75,006 dogs within a span of just 5.5 months. The targeted drive, conducted under the ongoing Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, was carried out between April 1 and September 15 this year.
The significant progress of the drive was reviewed by senior officials, including Additional Chief Secretary of Animal Husbandry, Mukesh Kumar Meshram. According to official data, the state has achieved an impressive 99.85 per cent of its sterilization target for this period. The intensive vaccination and sterilization operations are actively taking place across 17 municipal corporations in the state.
This current drive follows a sustained effort by the Uttar Pradesh government in previous years to manage the stray dog population. According to records, the state had successfully sterilized and vaccinated approximately 2.4 lakh stray dogs across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 fiscal years (1.2 lakh dogs each year). The current rapid pace reflects an enhanced focus by civic bodies to increase the capacity and efficiency of the sterilization network in response to growing public concern over stray animal-related safety.
During the review meeting, the state’s Chief Secretary directed officials to maintain regular monitoring of all pending work to ensure continued progress within the stipulated timelines. Authorities have also urged citizens to actively participate in the initiative by reporting aggressive or unwell stray dogs to local authorities or via the dedicated state helpline (1533) to prevent unfortunate incidents and ensure public safety.
