NEW DELHI, October 13, 2026 – Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Tuesday assured a group of petitioners that all their legal pleas concerning the recent wave of protests and subsequent administrative crackdowns in Delhi will be promptly listed for hearing.
The assurance came after several urgent pleas were mentioned before a Supreme Court bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana. The petitioners sought the immediate intervention of the apex court in light of the ongoing political unrest and alleged heavy-handedness by law enforcement agencies in the national capital.
“We will list all these matters. Make sure that the defects are cured,” CJI Surya Kant firmly informed senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who was leading the effort to mention the matters for urgent listing. The bench indicated that the pleas are likely to be taken up for hearing on either Wednesday or Thursday, provided all procedural filing defects are rectified by the petitioners.
During the proceedings, senior advocate Sankaranarayanan specifically highlighted a contempt plea filed by a journalist. The plea alleges a direct and willful violation of the Supreme Court’s clear directives issued on October 11.
Just days ago, on October 11, the top court had issued stern orders stating that citizens participating in peaceful gatherings must not be subjected to illegal detentions. Furthermore, the court had explicitly directed the Central Government to ensure that the Delhi Metro continues to function on its normal schedule and that internet services remain undisrupted, subject only to strict law-and-order prerequisites.
Delhi has been witnessing massive, escalating protests demanding the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. The agitation, primarily driven by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and various student organizations, centers around serious allegations of irregularities during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The protests have triggered an unprecedented security clampdown, mass detentions, and a significant disruption of normal life in the capital, prompting multiple stakeholders to seek judicial recourse.
