CM Omar Abdullah Seeks Report on Jammu Rain Damages, Promises Swift Relief: DyCM Choudhary

JAMMU, October 13, 2026 – Following the record-breaking rainfall that wreaked havoc across Jammu city over the weekend, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sought a comprehensive report detailing the widespread damages to ensure swift relief and the rapid restoration of public infrastructure.

Addressing the media in Jammu on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary expressed deep concern over the extensive devastation caused to residential areas and critical infrastructure. He assured the public that the government is actively assessing the losses and coordinating with relevant authorities to expedite repairs to damaged roads, drains, lanes, and culverts.

“Reports on the extent of the damage are being obtained from the concerned departments and the Commissioner of the Jammu Municipal Corporation to ensure that repair and restoration work is undertaken at the earliest,” Choudhary stated, emphasizing that the administration will make every effort to compensate the affected residents as soon as possible. The Deputy Chief Minister also expressed his distress over reports of a young woman being swept away by flash floods in the Domana area, holding out hope for her safe recovery.

Shifting focus to national developments, the Deputy CM strongly condemned the ongoing police crackdown on youth protesters in New Delhi. He urged the Central Government to resolve the standoff through constructive dialogue rather than resorting to force.

Taking a firm stance against the handling of the CJP protests, Choudhary highlighted the disturbing treatment of the demonstrators. “Look at how these young people are being detained—not just the boys, but the girls as well. Look at the way they are being dragged away and the manner in which police officers, security personnel, and groups in civvies are touching them. You can see for yourselves the misconduct and indignities being inflicted upon these young women,” he said, maintaining that such actions contradict India’s democratic traditions and constitutional values.

Linking the current protests in the national capital to broader issues of transparency—such as the recent NEET examination controversy and allegations regarding electoral rolls—Choudhary argued that the concerns raised by the youth must be addressed seriously. Referring to the allegations surrounding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, he stated that Kumar’s resignation would be the appropriate step on moral grounds.

The Deputy Chief Minister concluded by appealing to key constitutional institutions, including the President of India and the Supreme Court, to intervene and protect the country’s democratic framework from what he described as excessive measures by those in power.
