JAMMU/SRINAGAR, September 28, 2026 – Demanding the immediate resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, the Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Congress party held strong, coordinated protest demonstrations across the Union Territory on Monday. The protests, which saw the participation of scores of Congress leaders and grassroots workers, were part of a broader nationwide campaign launched by the party against the CEC over alleged irregularities and arbitrary decision-making regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In Jammu, a large number of Congress activists, led by senior local leaders including Sawhney, staged a massive demonstration outside the CEC’s office, raising slogans against both the Election Commission and the central government. Outlining the party’s core demands, a protesting leader stated, “We have four specific demands today. First, we want Gyanesh Kumar’s immediate resignation. Second, the CEC should be arrested and jailed for these constitutional violations. Third, all decisions taken during his tenure should be withdrawn immediately. Fourth, those behind these moves should also resign.” Similar protests were held in Srinagar, where party workers expressed their deep discontent over reports indicating that changes to statutory voter registration forms (Form 6) and the centralization of control over the electoral roll database were allegedly pushed through by the CEC, overriding internal objections from other Election Commissioners. The coordinated protests echo the intensifying offensive led by senior Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi, who recently intensified the political attack on the CEC, characterizing the alleged institutional lapses as an attack on democratic processes. During the protests in Jammu, police intervened as the demonstrations escalated, reportedly detaining several Congress leaders and workers to maintain public order.
