The high-level deliberations were triggered in the wake of reported internal “differences” within the Election Commission of India (ECI) and widespread allegations of irregularities concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The crucial Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting was chaired by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by senior party stalwarts, including former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with several general secretaries and state in-charges.
During the meeting, the Congress leadership discussed a coordinated plan to ramp up pressure on the Election Commission over decisions that opposition parties argue were made without the consensus of all Election Commissioners. The CWC evaluated both legal and political avenues to challenge the CEC’s recent directives. The Congress’s aggressive posture aligns with broader opposition concerns regarding the institutional integrity of the poll panel ahead of upcoming electoral exercises. Adding to the mounting pressure, the Supreme Court of India on Tuesday also agreed to hear a petition next week that raises serious doubts over the administrative decisions taken by the Election Commission under the leadership of CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The CWC’s strategic roadmap is expected to form the basis of the joint INDIA bloc strategy, with opposition leaders likely aiming to formally push for the CEC’s removal or demand strict accountability in Parliament.
