The vital infrastructure project is specifically designed to intercept and treat raw sewage inflows that currently threaten the ecological balance of the northern side of Dal Lake. Highlighting the administration’s multi-pronged approach to water body conservation, officials noted that this new state-of-the-art facility will substantially augment the existing sewage treatment capacity in Srinagar, ensuring that untreated effluents are systematically prevented from contaminating the fragile aquatic ecosystem. The comprehensive undertaking is part of broader, ongoing measures rigorously implemented by the government to maintain the hydraulic capacity of the lake channels, improve overall water flow, and strengthen environmental management around the interconnected urban water bodies that define the city’s landscape.
While the Gupt Ganga project marks a crucial milestone in pollution control for Dal Lake, the government acknowledged that further infrastructural enhancements are required in adjacent areas to achieve total environmental rejuvenation. Officials disclosed that while the extensive dredging and deepening operations of the main Gilsar channel are almost completely finished—a move expected to drastically improve water circulation—the comprehensive sewerage network intended to encircle and protect the Khushalsar and Gilsar lakes is still pending completion. The administration has reiterated its commitment to expediting these remaining works, emphasizing that the strategic combination of solid waste management initiatives, channel restoration, and high-capacity sewage treatment facilities like the one at Gupt Ganga will ultimately ensure the long-term survival and ecological health of Srinagar’s heritage water bodies.
