JAMMU, September 16, 2026 – Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to meticulously review the progress and implementation of the approved Action Plan designed to improve air quality in Jammu city. The comprehensive review meeting focused heavily on evaluating ongoing projects and formulating strategic interventions mandated under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Addressing the committee, the Divisional Commissioner firmly directed all concerned officers and executing agencies to ensure the strict, timely completion of ongoing environmental works and to establish a robust, sustainable mechanism for the proper, long-term maintenance of all assets created under the NCAP framework.
Following detailed, multi-departmental deliberations, the review committee granted formal approval for the installation of an Integrated Traffic Light System (ITLS) at strategically identified locations across Jammu city. This crucial technological intervention aims to significantly strengthen and streamline traffic management through an integrated, coordinated approach, thereby reducing vehicular emissions caused by chronic congestion. In addition to traffic management, the committee also approved a supplementary action plan and a comprehensive plantation proposal specifically targeting the Kot Bhalwal and Bhagwati Nagar areas, designed to bolster the city’s green cover and tangibly improve the surrounding urban environment.
Looking ahead, the committee decided to thoroughly re-examine the slate of projects proposed for the upcoming NCAP Action Plan for 2026-27. Kumar emphasized that this re-evaluation must prioritize high-impact interventions that yield the most substantial improvements in air quality while ensuring the highly effective and judicious utilization of available NCAP resources. He further stressed the importance of developing new green spaces, parks, and other environmental interventions only at highly suitable locations where their regular upkeep can be guaranteed. Concluding the review, the Divisional Commissioner directed officers to rapidly expedite the implementation of approved measures, laying special emphasis on strict dust control protocols, widespread road improvements, proactive traffic management, extensive greenery initiatives, and highly effective solid waste management to successfully achieve the core objectives of the National Clean Air Programme.
