High Drama at Udhampur’s MH Chowk as Youth Climbs Mobile Tower, Threatens Suicide

UDHAMPUR, October 3, 2026 – High drama and widespread panic gripped the bustling MH Chowk area in Udhampur on Friday when a young man climbed a mobile network tower and threatened to commit suicide. The incident brought traffic to a standstill and drew a massive crowd of anxious onlookers who gathered to witness the tense situation unfold.

According to eyewitnesses, the unidentified youth managed to bypass security measures and scale the towering structure, perching himself dangerously high above the ground. Once atop the tower, he began shouting and threatening to jump, causing severe alarm among the local shopkeepers and residents. Upon receiving emergency information about the suicide attempt, a heavy contingent of the Jammu and Kashmir Police rushed to the spot, accompanied by local administration officials and emergency rescue services.

The police immediately cordoned off the area around MH Chowk to prevent any untoward incidents and began negotiations with the youth. Using public address systems, senior police officers and local community members engaged the man in an hours-long counseling session, patiently listening to his grievances and assuring him that his demands or personal issues would be addressed properly. After a prolonged period of intense persuasion, the rescue teams successfully convinced the youth to safely descend from the tower.

Following his safe retrieval, the young man was immediately taken into police custody for his own safety and shifted to a local medical facility for a thorough physical and psychological evaluation. While the exact motives behind his extreme step remain under investigation, authorities have indicated that they are contacting his family members to understand the underlying causes of his distress. Local authorities have urged residents facing severe mental or emotional stress to seek professional counseling rather than resorting to such life-threatening actions.
