Rs 9,802 Crore Metrolite Dream Returned to J&K: Congress Leader Sanjay Sapru Demands Answers

SRINAGAR, October 3, 2026 – Raising serious concerns over the region’s stalled infrastructural development, senior Congress leader Sanjay Sapru has sharply questioned the Central Government’s decision to return and seemingly reject the ambitious Metrolite transit proposals for the twin capital cities of Jammu and Srinagar. The highly anticipated urban mobility project, which was projected to modernize public transport in the Union Territory, now faces an uncertain future.

In a recent statement, Sapru highlighted the massive administrative failure surrounding the project. “Projects worth Rs 9,802 crore remained stuck since 2017 and have now been unceremoniously returned to Jammu and Kashmir,” he stated, demanding immediate clarity and accountability from both the local administration and New Delhi.

The Metrolite project was originally envisioned as a cost-effective, high-efficiency light urban rail transit system designed specifically to decongest the rapidly growing traffic in both Jammu and Srinagar. For years, the project was touted as a hallmark of the new era of development in J&K, with detailed project reports (DPRs) heavily discussed and revised to meet Central guidelines. However, the unexpected return of the proposal files indicates a major setback for the region’s urban mobility goals.

Sapru criticized the systemic delays and the apparent lack of political will to push the Rs 9,802 crore infrastructure project across the finish line. He demanded that the concerned authorities immediately explain the grounds for the project’s rejection or return, asking why precious years and resources were wasted if the project was ultimately going to be stalled. The Congress leader further urged the J&K administration to transparently share the status of the Metrolite project with the public and clarify whether any alternative mass transit systems are being actively considered to address the worsening traffic crises in the capital cities.
