Jammu, June 15: A group of prominent citizens, social activists, intellectuals, retired government officials, youth representatives, and community leaders from across the Jammu region today formally launched the Jammu State People Movement (JSPM), a platform dedicated to seeking separate statehood for Jammu through constitutional and democratic means.
Addressing a press conference in Jammu, the founding members of the movement stated that the initiative has been launched to articulate the aspirations of the people of Jammu and to advocate for a governance structure that reflects the region’s distinct identity, developmental needs, and administrative requirements.
The leaders of JSPM emphasized that their demand is rooted in democratic principles and aims to ensure balanced regional development, equitable political representation, and effective administration. They argued that Jammu possesses a unique cultural, historical, and geographical identity that warrants separate statehood within the framework of the Indian Constitution.
Speakers at the event highlighted various issues concerning infrastructure development, employment opportunities, educational institutions, industrial growth, and regional representation. They maintained that a separate Jammu State would enable focused policy-making and accelerate socio-economic progress in the region.
The movement also appealed to citizens from all sections of society, including youth, women, professionals, traders, farmers, and social organizations, to join the campaign and contribute towards what it described as a peaceful and democratic movement for Jammu’s future.
The organizers clarified that JSPM will function as a non-political people’s platform and will undertake awareness campaigns, public consultations, seminars, and outreach programs across the Jammu division in the coming months. The movement intends to engage with policymakers, elected representatives, civil society groups, and constitutional authorities to present its case for separate statehood.
During the press conference, the participants reiterated their commitment to democratic values and constitutional methods, stressing that the movement would remain peaceful, inclusive, and focused on constructive dialogue.
The launch of the Jammu State People Movement marks a renewed effort by various sections of society to bring the issue of separate statehood for Jammu into public discourse and policy discussions at both regional and national levels.
