KISHTWAR, October 13, 2026 – In a significant agricultural and developmental achievement, Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district has secured the first position among 100 districts across the country for its exemplary performance in improving irrigation infrastructure. This milestone was achieved under the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY).
The prestigious recognition was conferred during a special function held at the National Agricultural Science Complex (Pusa) in New Delhi on Monday to mark the successful completion of one year of the PMDDKY scheme. Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan presented the Certificate of Excellence to the district. Additional District Magistrate Pawan Kotwal and Chief Agriculture Officer Kushal Chandel represented Kishtwar and formally received the award.
Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar, Pankaj Kumar Sharma, warmly congratulated the entire district administration team. He specifically appreciated the relentless efforts and synergy of the officials and ground-level workers in the Agriculture Department who played a crucial role in strengthening the region’s irrigation infrastructure.
The national award acknowledges Kishtwar’s proactive approach towards improving water availability for local agriculture and actively supporting sustainable farming practices. Upgraded and better irrigation facilities are crucial for the region, as they help local farmers significantly reduce their dependence on unpredictable rainfall, improve overall water management, and thereby boost agricultural productivity.
The recognition is expected to further encourage the Kishtwar district administration and the Agriculture Department to continue their ongoing efforts toward expanding irrigation facilities, promoting the highly efficient utilization of scarce water resources, and ultimately improving the livelihoods of the local farming community.
