Ladakh LG Orders Withdrawal of Criminal Cases Against 10 Individuals Linked to 2025 Leh Violence

LEH, October 22, 2026 – In a significant move aimed at fostering peace and reconciliation in the region, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Wednesday announced the withdrawal of criminal cases against 10 individuals booked in connection with the 2025 Leh violence.

The decision comes upon the recommendation of the Ladakh Police. With this latest development, a total of 55 individuals booked across 87 cases have been granted a reprieve over the past three months, signaling the administration’s intent to heal old wounds.

The cases stem from the tragic outbreak of violence on September 24 last year, when protests demanding statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to the Union Territory took a violent turn. The clashes resulted in the deaths of four people and left scores of others injured, casting a long shadow over the region.

Taking to the microblogging platform X, LG Saxena shared his thoughts on the decision: “In our continued commitment to fostering unity, healing, and lasting peace in Ladakh, I have approved the withdrawal of criminal cases against 10 individuals, linked to the unfortunate violence that erupted in Leh on September 24 last year.”

The LG emphasized that the move prioritizes justice and recovery over prolonged litigation. “This decision ensures a positive path forward for these individuals with their careers and lives… thereby fostering a stronger sense of peace, unity, and social harmony across the region,” he noted. He also extended his sincere gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for adopting a “sympathetic and sensitive approach” toward the victims and their families.

The administration has been executing this reconciliation process in phases. Earlier in September, the LG announced the withdrawal of criminal cases against 20 individuals, which followed an August announcement regarding plans to file closure reports in cases against 25 others linked to the unrest.
