SRINAGAR, September 2, 2026 – Escalating the political confrontation in Jammu and Kashmir, BJP leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Sunil Sharma has challenged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to resign and seek a fresh mandate from the public specifically on the issue of restoring statehood. The challenge comes as political tensions rise over the National Conference (NC) government’s employment policies and handling of government vacancies.
Addressing the media in Srinagar, Sharma accused the ruling party of utilizing the statehood demand as a political shield to divert public attention away from mounting administrative failures and rising youth unemployment.
1.The Statehood Challenge:
Questioning the Chief Minister’s political and moral standing, the LoP dared the NC leadership to test their popularity on a single issue. “If you are left with any moral values and ethics, resign once and fight the election in the name of statehood. People of J&K will show you your place,” Sharma stated. He criticized the NC for allegedly abandoning its broader election manifesto—which included promises of 200 units of free electricity, 10 kg of ration, one lakh jobs, and the restoration of Articles 370 and 35-A—to narrowly focus only on statehood.
2.Job Outsourcing Allegations:
The primary catalyst for the BJP’s mounting agitation is the alleged outsourcing of approximately 25,000 government vacancies. Sharma accused the NC government of placing the future of meritorious youth in the hands of private contractors rather than conducting transparent, regular recruitment drives. He alleged that private contractors are now appointing essential staff, including doctors and paramedics, based on political favoritism rather than merit, thereby betraying the region’s unemployed youth.
3.Protest and Counter-Protest:
The political climate has intensified rapidly, with both parties scheduling major, simultaneous demonstrations. While the BJP announced a gherao of the Civil Secretariat to protest the job outsourcing issue, the National Conference declared it would “peacefully gherao” BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu on the same day. The NC stated its counter-protest aims to demand accountability from the Centre regarding constitutional guarantees. Sharma condemned the NC’s move as an “unfortunate” diversionary tactic meant to dilute the BJP’s focus on youth employment concerns.
As both major political factions mobilize their cadres, the standoff highlights a shifting political discourse in J&K—one where constitutional debates are increasingly colliding with grassroots demands for employment, transparent governance, and administrative accountability.
