NEW DELHI, November 2, 2026 – In a significant political development ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, three rebel legislators of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday. The defection marks a major blow to the AAP government in the border state.
The three leaders—former IPS officer and Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Samana MLA Chetan Singh Jouramajra, and Sanour MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra—were formally inducted into the saffron party at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of senior party leaders.
The political shift follows a weekend of high drama within the Punjab AAP unit. Prior to joining the BJP, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh announced his resignation from both the primary membership of the AAP and the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Taking to Facebook, the former top cop shared a copy of his resignation letter addressed to Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan.
“I have resigned from the membership of Punjab Vidhan Sabha… I hereby tender my resignation of my seat in the House with effect from 1.11.2026,” Singh wrote in his official communication. He had reportedly been suspended by the AAP prior to his formal resignation.
The other two legislators, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, had tendered their resignations from the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday. This followed swift disciplinary action by the AAP high command, which had suspended both MLAs for alleged “anti-party activities.”
Following the rebellion and subsequent resignations, the Aam Aadmi Party has stated that it will formally petition the Assembly Speaker to disqualify the legislative memberships of the defected MLAs under the anti-defection law.
The induction of these three prominent leaders is expected to bolster the BJP’s organizational footprint and electoral prospects in the Malwa and Majha regions of Punjab as political realignments accelerate ahead of the upcoming state elections.
