JAMMU, October 16, 2026 – In a bid to ensure smooth and safe rail operations during the upcoming harsh winter months, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway has announced the cancellation of two major trains operating in the Kashmir Valley for a period of 15 days.
The railway authorities have scheduled essential ‘pre-winter destressing work’ on the railway tracks across the Valley. This critical maintenance is undertaken annually to prevent track fractures and ensure that the rail infrastructure can withstand the extreme sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall typical of the Kashmiri winter.
Due to the planned maintenance block, Train No. 74615 (Banihal – Baramulla) and Train No. 74620 (Baramulla – Banihal) will remain fully cancelled from October 17 to October 31.
The temporary suspension of these trains is expected to affect daily commuters who rely heavily on the Banihal-Baramulla rail link for affordable and rapid transit across the Valley. However, authorities have emphasized that the maintenance is non-negotiable for the long-term safety of the passengers and the integrity of the rail network.
Northern Railway officials have requested all passengers to plan their journeys accordingly and avoid inconvenience. Commuters are strongly advised to check the live status of their trains using the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or by contacting the Railway Enquiry Centre at the 139 helpline before heading to the stations.
