AIZAWL, September 8, 2026 – In a significant milestone for healthcare and organ donation in the northeast, at least 9,345 people in Mizoram have formally pledged to donate their eyes after death. To date, 632 deceased residents have already donated their eyes, successfully helping patients suffering from corneal blindness regain their sight. The inspiring figures were shared by health officials on Monday as the state marked the 41st Eye Donation Fortnight.
1.Current Registration and New Pledges:
The Mizoram Eye Bank, based at the Civil Hospital in Aizawl, officially maintains a registry of 9,312 eye donors. During the latest awareness programme, an additional 33 individuals stepped forward to make the pledge, bringing the total to 9,345. According to health officials, around 400 visually impaired patients in the state are currently registered and waiting to receive life-changing corneal transplants.
2.Recent Transplants and Medical Operations:
Highlighting recent medical successes, authorities revealed that between April and July of this year alone, 42 corneas were successfully retrieved across the state. Using these vital donations, 23 patients underwent corneal transplantation surgeries. Speaking at the event, Health and Family Welfare Department Principal Director Lalthlengliani emphasized how the noble act of eye donation allows the cornea of a deceased person to directly restore vision in someone else.
3.A Legacy of Vision Restoration:
The movement for eye donation in Mizoram has steadily grown over the past decade and a half. The Mizoram Eye Bank was formally established in 2008 to facilitate safe organ retrieval and storage. A year later, in September 2009, the state achieved its first successful corneal transplant, paving the way for hundreds of visually impaired individuals to reclaim their sight and vastly improve their quality of life.
The continued rise in pledges reflects growing public awareness and a deeply rooted culture of community welfare in Mizoram, offering renewed hope to the hundreds of patients still waiting on the state’s transplant registry.
