BISHKEK, August 31, 2026 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday on the sidelines of the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
The interaction marks a significant diplomatic milestone, as it is the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict earlier this year. The meeting comes after a series of telephonic conversations between the two leaders in recent months regarding the rapidly evolving situation in West Asia.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders held a “fruitful meeting” focused on reviewing the broader India-Iran bilateral relationship and addressing the pressing security challenges in the region.
1.Call for Dialogue and Diplomacy:
During the discussions, PM Modi reiterated India’s consistent position regarding the ongoing crisis in West Asia, emphasizing that all geopolitical issues must be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. He underlined the urgent need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in the region.
2.Maritime Security and Trade:
With escalating tensions impacting global shipping routes, safeguarding freedom of navigation and commerce was a key agenda item. PM Modi highlighted India’s growing concerns over disruptions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and the importance of unhindered transit for energy and goods.
3.Iran’s Stance on Regional Stability:
Prior to departing Tehran for the summit, President Pezeshkian addressed the media, stating that while Iran does not seek war, it will respond with “strength and determination” to any aggression. He emphasized that regional instability is detrimental to all nations and called for convergence to advance mutual economic and security goals.
The 26th SCO Summit, which also marks the 25th anniversary of the 10-member organization, brings together key regional leaders to deliberate on pressing international issues, security, and economic cooperation.
In a packed diplomatic schedule, PM Modi also held a separate bilateral meeting earlier in the day with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The two leaders discussed expanding ties across sectors such as defense, information technology, space, and pharmaceuticals.
Later on Monday evening, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold a highly anticipated bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to review the extensive India-Russia strategic partnership. PM Modi will also attend the official opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games at the invitation of Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.
