CHANDIGARH, November 5, 2026 – In a massive intelligence-led operation, the Punjab Police successfully dismantled multiple interconnected networks involved in illegal arms, explosives, and drug trafficking in Amritsar, arresting 16 individuals and recovering a substantial cache of sophisticated weapons and narcotics.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed the major breakthrough on Thursday, detailing that the Amritsar Rural Police spearheaded the extensive crackdown.
The significant recoveries from the arrested individuals include 34 kilograms of heroin, two sophisticated Uzi sub-machine guns, five illegal pistols, two hand grenades, and 26 live cartridges.
DGP Yadav revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the arrested accused were in direct contact with foreign-based handlers. These international handlers were allegedly orchestrating the supply and distribution of illegal weapons and narcotics to local criminal elements in Punjab.
The successful operation has also led to the resolution of three recent firing incidents in the state, establishing a clear link between the illegal weapons supply chains and active criminal gangs in the region.
Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Inspector General (IG) of the Border Range, stated that multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered across different police stations in the Amritsar district, including Gharinda, Beas, Mehta, Lopoke, and Chatiwind (Chheharta).
The police are currently conducting rigorous interrogations and investigating the backward and forward linkages of these networks. The objective is to identify and dismantle the entire supply chain, including the foreign-based masterminds, local suppliers, and other gang members involved in this cross-border illicit trade.
