NEW DELHI, September 11, 2026 – Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Friday, commencing a three-day visit to India to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit and hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, Putin was received at the airport by Minister of State K V Singh. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal extended a warm welcome on the social media platform X, emphasizing the “multifaceted and longstanding ties anchored in Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” between India and Russia. This visit marks Putin’s first in-person attendance at a BRICS summit outside of Russia since the outbreak of the Ukraine war in February 2022.
The two-day summit, hosted by India and set to begin on Saturday, aims to position the BRICS bloc as a stabilizing force amid a fragmented geopolitical landscape. Discussions are expected to focus on boosting collective resilience across critical sectors, including food security, energy, health, disaster reduction, and supply chains. The high-profile gathering is taking place against a complex global economic backdrop characterized by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the West Asia crisis involving the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, and the trade and tariff policies of the Trump administration. The summit will also see the participation of other key global leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, among others.
Ahead of the main summit proceedings, Putin and Modi are scheduled to hold extensive bilateral talks on Friday afternoon. The leaders are expected to explore ways to expand their bilateral trade and investments, with discussions focusing heavily on enhancing cooperation in defense, energy, technology, pharmaceuticals, and people-to-people exchanges.
