AI-Based Water Pump Monitoring System Launched to Modernize Jammu’s Urban Water Supply

JAMMU, September 11, 2026 – In a significant step towards modernizing the urban water-supply infrastructure in Jammu, the AI-based Monitoring and Automation System for Water Supply Infrastructure was officially inaugurated by Dr. Devansh Yadav, Commissioner of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC). The initiative, driven collaboratively by the JMC and the Jal Shakti Department (PHED), aims to drastically improve the monitoring, management, and operational efficiency of the city’s water distribution network to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted supply for citizens.

Under this technology-driven project, 418 AI-based panels are being systematically installed across various tubewells and pumping stations in the PHE Jammu urban area. Funded under the JMC City Grants, the total estimated cost of the modernization project is ₹5.83 crore. The core of the new setup utilizes Artificial Intelligence and Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) to continuously monitor the electrical and operational parameters of pumps and motors in real time. This integration allows PHED engineers to remotely control pumps, switching them on or off, and monitor pumping stations directly through a dedicated mobile application. The app provides instant access to crucial data, including pump status, electrical parameters, and trip conditions.

Beyond operational convenience, the AI system is equipped with robust protective features. It generates immediate alerts for hazardous conditions such as dry runs, overloads, phase imbalances, voltage fluctuations, and short circuits. Furthermore, the system is designed to secure critical infrastructure by sending notifications regarding anti-theft, intruders, and tampering. The AI’s analytical capabilities will identify abnormal operating conditions and deteriorating pump health at an early stage, enabling predictive and preventive maintenance. An additional innovative feature is AI-based flow estimation, which can approximate water discharge using power correlation rather than relying solely on conventional flow sensors. Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the Government of India’s broader AI Mission, leveraging advanced technology for improved public service delivery and energy efficiency.
