Jammu, July 13: The demand for a separate Jammu State gained fresh momentum as the Jammu People’s State Movement (JPSM) formally launched its campaign during a public gathering near the Maharaja Hari Singh statue at Tawi Bridge on Sunday. The protest was led by Prof. Virender Gupta, President of the movement, along with social activists, retired officials, youth representatives, and members of civil society.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Gupta said the movement seeks the creation of a separate Jammu State through democratic and constitutional means. He argued that Jammu deserves an administrative structure that prioritises regional development, employment generation, industrial growth, tourism, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He appealed to citizens to unite peacefully for what he described as a long-pending aspiration of the people of Jammu.
The gathering also served as the public launch of the Jammu People’s State Movement, which aims to bring together people from different social, professional, and political backgrounds under a common platform to advocate for separate statehood.
About Prof. Virender Gupta
Prof. Virender Gupta is a senior academic, political commentator, and social activist from Jammu. Over the years, he has remained actively involved in public discourse on issues concerning Jammu’s political representation, governance, and regional development. He has previously been associated with the Jammu Mukti Morcha, an organisation that historically advocated for the political and constitutional rights of the Jammu region. In recent years, Prof. Gupta has continued to write and speak extensively on regional issues, often advocating greater administrative autonomy and balanced development for Jammu.
The launch of the Jammu People’s State Movement comes amid renewed political discussions over the constitutional future of Jammu and Kashmir. While several political parties are demanding the restoration of full statehood for the existing Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu People’s State Movement has taken a different position by calling for the creation of a separate Jammu State.
The organisers announced that similar public outreach programmes, seminars, and awareness campaigns will be held across the Jammu region in the coming months to build public support for their demand.
True Roots Media will continue to follow developments and provide factual coverage of all viewpoints related to the evolving debate on Jammu’s political future.
