A significant development for Jammu & Kashmir’s grassroots democracy.
The State Election Commissioner has concluded discussions with election officials from both Jammu and Kashmir divisions regarding preparations for the upcoming Panchayat and District Development Council (DDC) elections.
According to reports, the Commission is working on a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) as voters may be required to cast votes simultaneously for Panch, Sarpanch, and DDC candidates. Officials are drawing upon their experience from the 2020 DDC elections, when some Panchayat seats were also filled alongside DDC polls.
What makes these elections particularly important is that Jammu & Kashmir currently has no elected local bodies in place:
• Panchayats ceased to exist on January 9, 2024.
• Municipal bodies completed their tenure in October-November 2023.
• Block Development Councils ended their term on January 9, 2024.
• District Development Councils completed their tenure on February 24, 2026.
As a concerned voter, I believe the absence of elected local representatives for such an extended period has affected grassroots governance and public participation. Local issues are best addressed when local institutions are active, accountable, and directly answerable to the people.
As someone aspiring to participate more actively in public life and potentially contest elections in the future, I welcome these developments and hope the election process moves forward smoothly and transparently.
The recent voter revision exercise has increased the electorate to over 72 lakh voters, reflecting the scale and importance of these upcoming elections.
Strong local bodies are the foundation of strong governance.
🇮🇳 Jai Hind.
