NEW DELHI, September 28, 2026 – Providing massive relief to millions of bank customers ahead of the critical half-yearly closing period, the proposed three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30 has been officially deferred at the last minute. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body representing various bank employee and officer unions, announced the withdrawal of the agitation following a crucial late-night meeting with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) on Sunday. Convening at 9:30 PM, just hours before the strike was set to commence, negotiators from both sides managed to reach a mutual understanding on key demands that have been at the center of the ongoing industrial dispute, most notably the long-pending demand to declare all Saturdays as holidays and the implementation of a uniform five-day banking week. The breakthrough ensures that all public sector banks, regional rural banks, and affected private lenders will continue normal operations starting Monday, averting severe disruptions to physical branch services, cash handling, and cheque clearances.
Detailing the terms of the temporary truce, the UFBU revealed that a high-level joint committee comprising representatives from both the IBA and the unions will be constituted immediately. This committee is specifically tasked with examining the feasibility of declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays, evaluating various alternatives, consulting all relevant stakeholders, and working towards a viable solution that balances employee welfare with customer convenience. While the banking unions had previously warned that they would proceed with the strike if the five-day workweek was not immediately implemented, the agreement to establish this dedicated committee marks a significant shift in their stance, moving the contentious issue into a fresh, targeted negotiation phase. The demand has technically been pending since the sweeping wage settlement signed on March 8, 2024, where the IBA had already recommended the proposal for final government approval.
In addition to the five-day banking week, the late-night talks also yielded progress on other major grievances raised by the bank officers. The IBA agreed to initiate formal discussions regarding necessary modifications to the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Scale IV and above officers, allowing the unions to address their structural concerns before any finalized proposal is forwarded to the Union Government. Both parties also committed to an expeditious resolution of other residual issues documented during the March 2024 discussions. As a direct result of these negotiated assurances, the UFBU has indefinitely postponed all associated protest programs, though union leaders stress that the strike has only been deferred, not permanently canceled, pending the actual outcomes of the forthcoming high-level committee meetings.
