LEH, September 28, 2026 – Marking the beginning of a vibrant three-day celebration of the region’s rich cultural heritage, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena officially inaugurated the Ladakh Festival 2026 at the Polo Ground in Leh. The grand event serves as a dynamic showcase of Ladakh’s traditional lifestyle, art, cuisine, sports, and immense tourism potential. The festival features a wide array of activities, including handicraft and handloom exhibitions, traditional archery, horse polo, mask dances, river rafting, and astronomy sessions. The opening day was highlighted by captivating performances from the Stringmo Sisters and the Shillong Chamber Choir, alongside various folk presentations, which followed a colourful cultural parade that commenced from Karzoo and culminated at the Polo Ground.
Addressing the large gathering, LG Saxena described the festival as a crucial platform for preserving Ladakh’s centuries-old traditions and projecting its unique cultural identity on both national and international stages. He emphasized that as the Union Territory progresses on the path of modernization, safeguarding its deep cultural roots and fragile ecology becomes increasingly paramount. Stressing a shift in perspective, the Lieutenant Governor noted that tourism development should not merely focus on increasing visitor numbers, but rather on promoting sustainable, community-led, and environmentally responsible tourism. He urged visitors to experience the region responsibly by engaging with local communities and supporting artisans, adding that the administration is actively working to transform Ladakh into a premier all-season destination encompassing wellness, adventure, and eco-tourism.
