JAMMU, September 18, 2026 – A roadside birthday celebration turned tragic on Thursday night when a young man was allegedly stabbed to death by his friend following a dispute over cake being smeared on his face. The incident occurred near the Lower Roop Nagar area of Jammu, where a group of friends had gathered to celebrate the birthday of Neeraj, also known as Anshu. The celebration quickly devolved into violence, resulting in the death of Pawan Nair, alias Sameer, who suffered a fatal neck injury during the altercation. Following rapid police action, the accused Neeraj and his brother, Rishu, who was also reportedly present at the scene, have been apprehended and placed in police custody at the Janipur Police Station.
According to preliminary police investigations, a confrontation broke out during the cake-cutting ceremony after Pawan allegedly smeared cake on the birthday boy’s face. The act reportedly triggered a heated verbal exchange between Neeraj and Pawan. As their mutual friends attempted to intervene and de-escalate the situation, Neeraj allegedly drew a ‘khokhri’ (a sharp-edged weapon) that he was carrying and violently attacked Pawan, inflicting a severe injury to his neck. Following the attack, the injured youth was rushed to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu by his friends John Sotra, Gaurav Singh, and Sugandh Bhatti. However, upon arrival at approximately 9:00 PM, the attending doctors declared Pawan brought dead.
The police post at GMC Jammu immediately alerted Police Station Janipur, prompting a swift response from law enforcement officials who arrived at the hospital to begin inquiries. Based on the preliminary findings and witness testimonies, the police registered a formal case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a comprehensive investigation. While the accused and his brother are currently undergoing interrogation, the police have also initiated proceedings to recover the murder weapon used in the crime. The body of the deceased has been shifted to the hospital mortuary for a thorough post-mortem examination. Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation is actively underway to establish the complete sequence of events, determine the specific roles of all individuals present, and ensure strict, time-bound legal action against those responsible for the fatal attack.
