Minister Javed Ahmed Rana Inaugurates Rs 5.91 Crore Flood Protection Works in Jammu

JAMMU, October 19, 2026 – Underscoring the government’s commitment to climate resilience and disaster preparedness, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, on Sunday inaugurated major flood protection works worth Rs 5.91 crore along the vulnerable stretches of River Nikki Tawi and River Waddi Tawi in Jammu.

The critical infrastructure projects are aimed at mitigating riverbank erosion, reducing severe flood risks, and safeguarding vulnerable habitations, fertile agricultural land, and public infrastructure against erratic weather patterns and heavy river discharge during the monsoon season.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Rana emphasized the necessity of a proactive and sustainable approach to flood management. “As we witness increasingly erratic weather patterns and climate-related challenges, strengthening our preparedness against floods has become imperative,” he stated. He directed officials to ensure that all protective works adhere strictly to prescribed technical standards, focusing on durability and timely execution.

The flood management interventions are funded under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme and NABARD, spanning three distinct projects:

  1. Belicharana Project: Completed at an estimated cost of Rs 229.94 lakh under SASCI, this project involves flood protection measures along the left bank of River Nikki Tawi, downstream of the 4th Bridge at Belicharana. MLA Bahu, Ch. Vikram Randhawa, attended the inauguration of this phase.
  2. Channi Nankey/Nandni Project: Estimated at Rs 69 lakh under SASCI, this intervention includes the construction of two 18-meter-long spurs along the left side of River Waddi Tawi to regulate river flow and minimize bank erosion.
  3. Makwal Forward Post Project: Funded under NABARD at a cost of Rs 292 lakh, this comprehensive project involves the construction of revetment crates and earthen embankments along the right side of River Nikki Tawi, extending from Omman Post to Makwal Forward Post in the border village of Makwal. MLA Marh, Surinder Kumar, was present during the inauguration of this vital segment.

These strategic engineering interventions are expected to provide immediate relief and long-term security to local communities and border villages heavily reliant on adjoining agricultural lands.
