Minister Javid Dar Calls for Technology-Driven Transformation of J&K’s Apple Industry

SRINAGAR, October 29, 2026 – Underscoring the urgent need to modernize the backbone of Kashmir’s agrarian economy, Minister for Agriculture Production, Rural Development, and Panchayati Raj, Javid Ahmad Dar, called for a comprehensive, technology-driven transformation of Jammu and Kashmir’s apple industry.

The Minister advocated for the swift adoption of technological innovations, precision horticulture, smart farming, and improved market connectivity to significantly enhance growers’ incomes and cement the region’s position in both domestic and international markets.

Dar was speaking as the chief guest at the 6th Edition of the CII J&K Apple Conclave 2026, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the Radisson Collection in Srinagar. Held under the theme “From Orchard to Global Market,” the conclave brought together stakeholders to brainstorm strategies for unlocking the vast potential of the apple sector amidst an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

Emphasizing the transition toward technology-driven horticulture, Dar highlighted the critical importance of moving away from traditional cultivation. He stressed the adoption of modern orchard management practices, precision farming techniques, and scientific interventions to improve overall productivity, guarantee consistent quality, and make apple cultivation economically rewarding and environmentally sustainable.

“Strengthening Jammu and Kashmir’s apple economy requires a highly coordinated approach encompassing orchard modernization, scientific cultivation, efficient post-harvest management, value addition, and a robust marketing infrastructure,” the Minister stated. He urged greater synergy between government departments, industry representatives, agricultural scientists, and local growers to translate these emerging opportunities into tangible, on-ground benefits.

Addressing post-harvest challenges, Javid Dar emphasized that improved grading, standardized packaging, scientific storage, and streamlined supply-chain management are crucial to minimizing post-harvest losses. These steps, he noted, are vital for preserving product quality and enabling growers to secure highly lucrative market returns.

The conclave was also attended by Professor Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K), who graced the event as the Guest of Honour and shared insights on agricultural research and development.
