NEW DELHI, September 14, 2026 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a strong warning that the “weaponisation” of technology and critical minerals could significantly hinder global shared prosperity, urging member nations to prioritize cooperation as the BRICS summit concluded on Sunday. Addressing the concluding session in New Delhi, the Prime Minister emphasized inclusivity in technology adoption. His remarks assumed particular significance amid mounting global concerns regarding China’s restrictive export policies on critical minerals. Flagging the increasing number of global conflicts, Modi called on BRICS nations to work together to protect ordinary citizens from their far-reaching impacts and to build a robust collective resilience against future challenges such as pandemics, climate disasters, and supply-chain disruptions.
Highlighting the growing influence of the bloc, Modi stated that developing nations in the Global South increasingly trust BRICS because their voices are heard and solutions are created in partnership with them rather than being imposed. He outlined that India’s chairship of the grouping was anchored on four key pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. To tangibly address these goals, Modi announced that the bloc had agreed on a BRICS Integrated Early Warning System to prevent and respond to infectious diseases, along with Early Warning Data Integration Guidelines for disaster management. Furthermore, he noted that the newly established BRICS Logistics Supply Chain Cooperation Framework will play a vital role in making global supply chains more reliable and resilient.
The summit’s final day also witnessed major cooperative announcements from other global leaders. Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled a five-point initiative to boost cooperation in technology, manufacturing, and trade, announcing that Beijing will lead the creation of an open-source AI ecosystem specifically for BRICS member nations. Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed the establishment of a dedicated platform focused on driving economic growth within the BRICS framework. The summit, which saw participation from leaders of partner states and countries invited by India, concluded with a unified call for an improved global governance structure and a commitment to ensuring that the benefits of BRICS innovations are accessible to the broader Global South.
